Two people can have the same curl pattern and need completely different products.
So when we’re figuring out what your curls need, we look at three things:
Your scalp. Your strands. Your style.
Is your scalp oily, dry, sensitive, flaky, or prone to buildup?
This tells us what kind of cleansing you need and how often your hair may need to be washed.
And your scalp doesn’t always match the rest of your hair. Oily roots and dry ends are incredibly common. So are sensitive scalps with curls that still need plenty of conditioning.
That’s why we choose your shampoo for your scalp first.
This is where we figure out how much your hair can handle.
Are your strands fine or coarse? Do rich conditioners leave them soft and happy, or flat and greasy? Does your hair soak up moisture, or does everything seem to sit on top?
This helps us decide how much conditioning, moisture, protein, and weight your hair needs.
Dry hair doesn't always need the richest formula. Fine hair doesn't always need the lightest one.
It depends on how your strands behave.
Once your hair and scalp are taken care of, we look at the result you actually want.
More definition? More volume? Softer curls? Stronger hold? Better humidity protection? Longer-lasting wash days?
Hydration and hold are different jobs.
If your curls look great when they're wet but fall apart a few hours later, adding more moisture probably isn't the answer. You may need something that helps hold those curl clumps together longer.
This is where we choose your styler, or decide whether layering two makes more sense.
It still tells us something. The difference between a loose wave and a tight curl will come into play when deciding your hair goals and styling techniques.
But knowing you're a 2C or a 3B doesn't tell us whether your scalp gets oily in two days, whether rich products flatten your curls, how much moisture your strands can handle, or how much hold you want.
Angela and Brenna are a perfect example. Same 3B curl pattern. Very different hair.

3B | Sensitive Scalp | Fine, Dry Strands
Angela's hair needs moisture, but too much weight will flatten her curls. She uses Mystic Shampoo and Conditioner, Apple Curl Serum for lightweight hydration and structure, and Mystic Gel for strong hold and humidity protection.

3B | Dry/Flaky Scalp | Coarse, Dry Strands
Brenna's hair can handle a lot more moisture. She uses Aqua Shampoo most wash days, Silver Shampoo when her scalp needs it, Aqua Conditioner and Curl Cream for richer moisture, then Mystic Gel to lock everything in.
Your products are only part of the equation.
How wet your hair is when you style, how much product you use, whether you diffuse or air dry, when you break your gel cast, and even the weather can change your results.
Those are things we troubleshoot after we get the foundation right.
Because the goal isn't to follow a curly hair rulebook.
It's to understand what your scalp, your strands, and your style actually need.
