Life happens. Trees fall. Events don't go as planned. People let us down.

We can't control these things. We can, however, control how we respond to events and people around us. In a world that feeds a constant state of anxiety, it is easy to fall into a reactive pattern allowing external events to govern our mindset and our actions. This, however, can quickly spiral way out of control as though we are not in charge of ourselves anymore.

One thing I remind myself constantly is that most of these events don't require an immediate reaction. There is usually at least an extra few moments to pause, steady our breath, and choose a response rather than an involuntary reaction. It's not easy. It takes practice, patience, and a lot of self-forgiveness.
